What we know as the Ducati motorcycle company actually began in 1926 is a maker of vacuum tubes and other electronic components. During World War II, the Ducati electronics factory was a common target of Allied bombing. 

Ducati's history as a motorcycle company began in 1944 when Ducati began developing a small engine suitable for mounting on a bicycle. In fact, early Ducati motorcycles strongly resemble bicycles. As the trend in motorcycle design moved toward larger motorcycles, Ducati responded with a line of motor scooters.  In the early 1950s, the motorcycle group in the electronics group were split into two companies.

The first truly successful modern motorcycle for Ducati was the Ducati Mach 1, and in the early 60s the Mach 1was the fastest 250 cc road bike available. Despite ownership changes in the 80s and 90s, Ducati continued to produce highly successful motorcycles on both the race circuit and for consumers.
